Vilon

A Khavinson-class thymus and immune bioregulator. The simplest peptide in the class — two amino acids — and one of the most cited, including in animal lifespan studies. As with the whole class, the evidence is Russian-language, unreplicated, and does not meet the standard applied elsewhere in this database.

Overview

Peptide bioregulators are built on a specific claim: that very short peptides extracted from — or synthesised to match — a particular organ can travel to that same organ and restore its normal function as it ages. Vilon is a dipeptide of lysine and glutamic acid, derived from the thymus preparation Thymalin. It appears more often than most of the class in the group's animal longevity work, where repeated courses were reported to extend median lifespan in mice and rats. The proposed route is direct interaction with DNA to switch tissue-specific genes back on. That mechanism has been demonstrated to the satisfaction of the group that proposed it and essentially nobody else.

Small Russian studies from the originating institute. No registered Western trials, no independent replication, and no published randomised placebo-controlled evidence meeting international standards.

Reported safety signals

  • Human safety data outside Russian clinical practice is effectively absent.
  • No independent pharmacology, toxicology or clinical replication exists in the international literature.
  • The "peptide bioregulator" gene-regulation hypothesis underlying this whole class comes from a single research group and is not independently established.
  • Products sold under one name may be either an animal organ extract or a synthetic peptide — chemically different things with different risk profiles.

Common questions

Do the rodent lifespan results mean anything?

They would if replicated. Rodent lifespan work is notoriously sensitive to diet, housing, strain and statistical handling, which is why the field takes independent replication — such as the NIA Interventions Testing Program does — as the bar. These results have not been through anything like that.
