Overview

Standard antidepressants take weeks to work. Researchers noticed that mice lacking a potassium channel called TREK-1 behave as if they are already on antidepressants, and that blocking that channel might produce the same effect quickly. Spadin is a natural peptide that blocks TREK-1; PE-22-28 is a shortened, more potent version of it. In rodents it produced antidepressant-like effects within days rather than weeks.

Common questions

Would this work faster than an SSRI?

In mice, the antidepressant-like effect appeared within about four days rather than the two to three weeks typical of SSRIs. Whether that translates to humans is completely untested — no person has taken it in a study.
